Bill and I learned to play golf on the West Course at Merion without a membership. That made for many a happy day on the links. We cut lawns together to make money which we spent at Dick's for food and buying beer for the weekends. Once he met Charlotte , we would all go out Friday nights. He was a good friend and is still missed.
Bill and I knew each other in school, but we were never really good friends until we both moved to Maryland. He and Charlotte moved to Laurel Maryland and had three chldren. Bill worked for AT&T in nearby DC. They had a nice house and When I was transfered to Maryland I stayed in their basement condo until I found a place of my own. Billy, as we all called him loved to party and we spent many a night building "the bar" in his new home. We went fishing on the Chesapeake Bay one lonely dark fall night on a boat that I just purchased. What a night that was, on the way to the Bay Bridge all was calm, but on the way back all hell broke loose. Worse than that, we ran out of beer and cigarettes. We got home safe, a bit wet, cold and got some serious heat from Charlotte. Billy left us when he was very young and I still think remember the good time we had.
In 1954, the fifth grade class at Preston School only had thirteen kids -- it was like a private school with Mrs. Kelly, our teacher. At the beginning sixth grade in 1955, we had four new kids join our class and we now had a whopping 17!. Our football team was understandably rather thin in some talent respects and Bill played offense and I played defense. We had a platoon system at Preston well before the NFL!. Equipment was sparse and Bill and I had to share the same helmet. When he went on the field he took the helmet and when the offense gave up the ball he'd run toward me and pitch it to me. Quite a scene. Bill, rest in peace my friend.
